On June 1, 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the New York State Police issued 11,946 tickets following their increased enforcement efforts during the 2016 Memorial Day holiday (May 27, 2016 through May 30, 2016).
"During the 96-hour campaign, which was funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Police increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. As part of the enforcement, Troopers also targeted speeding and aggressive drivers across the State."
The New York State Police report that they arrested 224 people for DWI and wrote 3,424 Speeding Tickets, 358 Distracted Driving Tickets (texting and using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle) and 2,173 tickets for seat belt violations.
Breaking down these numbers, as they relate to Rockland County, Orange County, Sullivan County, Ulster County and Greene County, Troop F reports that they made 38 DWI arrests, issued 248 Speeding tickets, 449 Seatbelt tickets, 11 tickets for violations of the Move Over Law and 47 tickets for Distracted Driving.
Additionally, Troop T, who patrol the New York State Thruway, report that they made 21 DWI arrests, issued 528 Speeding tickets, 696 Seatbelt Tickets, 37 tickets for violations of the Move Over Law and 62 tickets for Districted Driving.
In Rockland County, the New York State Police patrol the New York State Thruway, Palisades Interstate Parkway and, in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies and their statewide jurisdiction, they also patrol all other public highways and local roads.
